So what does self-monitoring do for you? It tells you how you are doing with keeping the weight off. It offers you the chance to see how and why you are keeping off the weight. It warns you when you need to be warned. Self-monitoring does all of this and more; it causes you to change your behavior without even lifting a finger.
Here’s an example. Let’s say by monitoring yourself you discover you have moody times during the day. You note this fact; and you also file away the idea you can alter your mood with food. This observation and these thoughts kick your memory into high gear. You clearly remember that in the past you ate to quell moods. Now your caution flag is definitely up. You now have an early warning system at your disposal, one that wasn’t there before you started monitoring.
