Most people think they have to exercise for numerous hours per week to burn the extra calories and lose weight. The popular belief for weight loss is the longer and harder the better.  But this is really not true for effective and lasting weight loss.  There are many people stuck at the same weight or actually gain weight despite multiple exercise bouts in one day.  Why can’t we lose more weight with excessive exercise?

Seventy-five percent of how low your body weight will go has to due with your diet. The remaining 25% is related to exercise and genetics. The New York Times Magazine had an article last week called Weighing the Evidence on Exercise. Eric Ravussin, a professor at Pennington Biomedical Research Center who’s been studying weight loss for years, said “In general, exercise by itself is pretty useless for weight loss.”  What he meant by his statement is that long hard exercise sessions increases your appetite to a point where you end up consuming more calories than you burn up by exercising. I have seen this happen to my clients for years. They want to lose weight so they start running or biking hard for an hour, five to six days per week. They become so hungry that they start eating way more calories than they burned up running. The end result is no weight loss or weight gain and an overuse exercise injury.  It becomes very discouraging but for fear of gaining weight they continue to exercise too hard and gain nothing – just lost time and injury.

I’ve seen it happen many times when a person is forced to slow down whether it’s for a vacation or the overuse injury.  Finally they find that they are not as hungry, eat less and actually lose weight.  You can reach a point of diminishing returns very quickly with exercise. If you perform too much exercise just to burn extra calories, you will ultimately become ravenously hungry resulting in overeating and gorging. In addition, too much exercise can lead to injury, burnout and insomnia, and a host of other ailments. Learn how to control your weight with your diet. You should exercise for maximum results in a minimal amount of time.  Be efficient and effective with a small amount of time – it really works best!

How to Exercise Without Getting Hungry…
  • Short Interval Workouts: Strengthen your cardiovascular system for maximum results in less than 20 minutes, once or twice a week.
  • Full-Body Strength Workouts: Muscular Strength and Endurance can be achieved in only two full-body strength workouts a week, lasting about 45 minutes each.
  • Cross Train Easy Style:  Walk, hike, or bike easy for longer periods of time without putting undo stress on your body.
  • Diet… Not the easiest thing but it can be with the right planning.   If you skip a meal, don’t.

Let me know if exercise makes you hungry and you still aren’t getting results from your hard workouts.  Let’s make it happen!

This article is so true. I recently increased the amount of exercise I do as I felt I wanted to get even fitter -the result was I started eating more and have put on half a stone! So its great to find an article that actually tells me why, so I am back to half an hour of exercise a day 5 times a week and I am trying Slim Fast - hope it works!

Interesting as i run up to 10 miles a day and have just cut it to 4 miles every other day, and feel better for it.
Not so tied and want to go out for my next instead of forcing myself out of the door.

So what i'm thinking is when i start on the plan ( 10th may 2011) its all about keeping it under control, being happy and you will achive your weight loss goal.
It will just take a bit longer, than rushing into it losing weight fast in the 1st 2 weeks but then giving up, because you are fed up and feeling burned out.

I found that I was hungry after gym, but have also noticed that if I drank lots of fluids afterwards it wasn't so bad. Always try to have a healthy snack in gym bag ready for after session, so less tempted to grab something unhealthy on way home

The secret to losing weight with exercise is to firstly make sure you are doing 'fat burning' exercise and not too much muscle building and then the answer to the hunger is 'will power' along with healthy snacking and eating. I have been fat burning at the gym 2 or 3 times a week since November ( with a 2 week break at Xmas because it was closed) and following a sensible diet ( even the odd takeaway slipped it), I've lost 1 1/2 stone, without really feeling like I'm missing out, I still eat lasagne, chilli, battered fish etc I've just learned to cook healthier options.

i found i put on weight when i started the gym! i was exercising at least for an hour at least three times a week and watching what i ate as well - so i was starving hungry all the time plus the weight never came off! Now i do short bursts and gentler activity such as walking or yoga as well as my favourite step class at the gym once a week to keep my general fitness up. starting slim fast 2 days ago and already feeling in control and very positive.

The danger with an article like this is that people will use it as an excuse not to exercise...Obese people don't understand food moderation so they're not going to understand exercise moderation?!

I have combined the Slim Fast diet and cardio gym sessions (3-5 times per week, at between 500-700 calories a session) and seen fantastic results at a moderate (and therefore lasting) pace.

I believe the reason for my success has been eating my evening meal after my gym workout - when I'm still burning calories! I have also found I am more energetic in the evenings if I go to the gym after work rather than come straight home and fall asleep in front of the telly!

I find "How to Exercise Without Getting Hungry" a ridiculous statement - of course you're going to get hungry, that's just nature! It's irritating how society has deemed "feeling hungry" as a sign of a bad diet and exercise program!!!
