Eating for weight loss, whilst travelling, is not as difficult as people make it out to be. Don’t use travel as an excuse to eat junk food, and reverse all the hard work you’ve been putting in.
More than likely, it’s not your fault that you’ve struggled to eat healthy, whilst on the road. Most people don’t have the right information, and guidelines to follow, while travelling. I am here to the rescue. Let me share a list of tips I’ve put together to help you, and me, stay on track while travelling:
Pack for the road
If you are travelling by car, packing is the key “ingredient” to your success. You can take apples, raw nuts, healthy sandwiches, and many other, easy to carry foods with you. If you're travelling by plane, almost every airport sells fruits and nuts at the magazine kiosks.
I suggest going to buy healthy snacks like this, as it can be very tempting to eat all the plane food including pudding, if it is sitting in front of you. Don’t even allow yourself to be tempted. Pack some fruits and nuts in advance.
Write down everything you eat
I am well aware that this can be a pain. But if you are serious about your fat loss, it’s a must. Research has proven that the more you write downwhat you eat, the more weight you will lose. Post your food choices on Facebook, Twitter, or any other social outlet. With this type of accountability and social support, you will think twice about eating that slice of greasy pizza.
Don’t drink your calories while traveling
This rule applies at all times, but is especially important to follow, whilst travelling. By implementing this rule on the road, you will save yourself thousands of calories from your diet.
Ever looked up the calories in a latte? It is mind bottling! Stick with water, unsweetened tea or black coffee. If you are on business and you feel “obligated” to drink alcohol, then stick to wine and sip slowly.Avoid all mixed drinks and juices.
If you are travelling and have a busy day ahead, plan out when and what you are going to eat and try your best to stick with it. For example, if you know you’ll be attending a restaurant for dinner, take a look at their menu online.
Most restaurants have nutritional menus online that give you a breakdown of calories and macronutrients. Most people fail because they haven’t thought ahead. Failing to plan is Planning to fail. It’s that simple. Know what you’re going to eat and don’t budge.
Eat tons of fruits and veggies
This should be a no-brainer. It is well known that fruits and veggies are the key component to any good, weight-loss eating plan. These foods are full of fibre and nutrients that will leave you full and satisfied for hours. So whenever fruit and vegetables are offered at breakfast, lunch, or dinner, make sure to focus your meal around those.
Be Mindful at Dinner
Dinner is the biggest meal of the day while traveling; the time go out with friends, family, or co-workers to enjoy some food and socialising. This is usually where people really “mess up” their diet.
If you want a nice steak, wine and some dessert, skip the bread and appetizers that most places offer. This way you are sticking to the 3 things you want, whilst avoiding extra calories.Fill up your belly with vegetables like broccoli, asparagus and salad.
Reward Yourself with a “Treat Meal”
I have talked about this in a prior post. Always try to rewardyourself with a treat meal, once a week. This is especially important while traveling.Just be sure that you have earned this reward meal and that it’s just a meal, not “meals”.Don’t reward yourself with a bagel or nasty hotel food, butenjoya nice dinner at the local steakhouse.
Don’t overcomplicate things
Although I have provided these tips to follow while travelling, don’t get obsessive compulsive with them.If you happen to slip-up while travelling, forget about it and move forward in the right direction.
Nobody is perfect
More than likely unexpected events will come up while on the road. No worries.Just try your best to stick to your plan and don’t overcomplicate things. Enjoy your travels and let go of all the stress.Get your mind right and you will win the fight!
